The author started off the book with a Native Hawaiian Chant and the backstory behind it. I think this was a great way to reel readers in and make them want to continue reading.
As I kept reading, I learned that the author decided to put her own backstory into the book. Not only did it go all the way back to her grandparents, it also explained any myths, legends, and stories that were mentioned.
